DETROIT (WWJ) – The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for southeast Michigan, in effect from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Tuesday.
CBS62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus said Tuesday’s high will approach the record of 101 degrees, set back in 1887, which will actually feel like 107 degrees when combined with the humidity.
An excessive heat warning means a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected. High humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible.
The weather service advises that people should drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Madaus says children, seniors and those with conditions such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. People are advised to check on older relatives and neighbors.
