Dance and theater department students from the Detroit School of Arts, Martin Luther King, Cass Tech, and Renaissance High Schools are in for a treat. Lauren Anderson, who became the first African-American Prima Ballerina of a major ballet company with Houston Ballet in 1990, will give a lecture and teach a master class to the students. This program will take place at Detroit’s Renaissance High School on April 13th from 2- 5 p.m.
Anderson is one of the few African-American ballerinas at the head of a major ballet company anywhere in the world and having her share her passion with Detroit’s most talented dancers will no doubt help them to cast visions for the possibilities of their own futures.
As the Education and Community Engagement Director at the Houston Ballet, Anderson conducts master classes and lectures on dance and her historic career as one of America’s most distinguished African-American ballerinas. She is delighted to bring this program to Detroit students. Her presentation will include excerpts from the classical ballet Coppelia performed by a diverse group of students that she has personally coached.
“I am happy to bring Coppelia, a comical ballet for all ages, to the Metro Detroit Area. Detroit needs more classical ballet!” said the Houston native.
Performances of Coppelia will be held on Saturday, April 21st at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 22nd at 3 p.m. at the Bloomfield Hills Performing Arts Center at 4200 Andover Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48302. Tickets are available through “Seat Yourself” at ArtsAtTheLink.org. Reserved seating is $30, general admission $25, students with valid I.D. $20, and $15 for children ages 2-12. VIP Experience with Anderson one hour before each show is $50. Groups Sales available at (248) 733-0200.
