Chauvin is charged with second-and third-degree murder as well as manslaughter in relation to the May 25 death of George Floyd. Floyd’s death and the bystander video of the arrest the before he died drew major controversy and one of the largest movements for social justice in a generation, dating back to the 1960s. This movement drew Black communities, and allies, that demanded justice — and are still seeking answers in hopes that justice will be served.
A number of bystander videos of the arrest show Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over eight minutes. Floyd was pronounced dead at a local hospital several hours later.
Opening arguments start today after 15 jurors — 12 regular jurors and three alternates — were chosen over the span of more than two weeks earlier this month.
