During the summer heat wave reaching extreme temperatures this week, Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) is helping the thousands of senior citizens it serves—the most vulnerable population during this weather emergency. Working in partnership with the Detroit Recreation Department and the Detroit Public Library, several cooling centers are available.
DAAA is doing the following for homebound seniors:
Detroit Meals on Wheels drivers delivering the daily hot meals check on the status of the DAAA clients;
Detroit Meals on Wheels drivers will be supplying senior clients with bottles of water daily;
Detroit Meals on Wheels clients will receive heat safety education information specifying how to take precautions to prevent heat illness and exhaustion;
Within the DAAA Long-Term Care/Care Management department, the care managers are calling priority clients that are medically fragile to check their status during the heat wave;
Under the DAAA Waiver Program within the Long-Term Care/Care Management department, DAAA will provide electric fans that will be distributed to qualified Waiver participants.
The DAAA Long-Term Care/Care Management department provides transportation to and from Detroit Area Agency on Aging’s funded Adult Day Care facilities. Seniors can also obtain cooling center information provided by the Detroit Recreation Department and the Detroit Library on our website www.daaa1a.org or by calling (855) ASK DAAA (275-3222).
For information about how to get assistance for homebound seniors, older adults over 60 and their caregivers and adults with disabilities during the extreme heat, call Detroit Area Agency on Aging Information & Assistance at (313) 446-4444.
