Our Health. Our Stories. Our Power: Black Women and Breast Cancer Awareness

Must read

For generations, Black women have been the heartbeat of their families and communities — showing strength through caregiving, work, and faith. But when it comes to our own health, that same strength often means we put ourselves last.

And when breast cancer strikes, that delay can be deadly.

Black women are more likely to be diagnosed at younger ages, face more aggressive forms of the disease, and die at higher rates than white women — even when we receive the same treatment. Yet our voices are often missing from the data that drives how care is delivered and how research dollars are spent.

That’s why Word In Black, in partnership with the Michigan Chronicle, is calling on Black women across the country to share their experiences through a short, confidential survey about breast cancer.

This isn’t just about statistics — it’s about our stories, our lives, and our right to be heard.

“Every response is a heartbeat. Every voice adds to the chorus demanding better outcomes for Black women,” said organizers of the Word In Black Health Equity Initiative.

Your response will help shape the way healthcare systems, media, and policymakers understand the real barriers Black women face — from delayed screenings and limited access to care, to mistrust built on years of unequal treatment.

Taking this survey is one small act that can spark major change. It takes less than five minutes, but its impact could last for generations.
