Now that the 2015 Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater has concluded, we can enumerate the best and worst episodes from the grandest entertainment awards program in the world.
With a number of awards, musical performances and practically every A-lister you could possibly think of under one roof, you know there were going to be at least a few highlights and hiccups
Take a look at the best and worst from the 2015 Oscars.
Best: Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris kicked off the night with a scorching verbal missile: “Tonight we honor the best and whitest…sorry, I mean brightest,” before commencing the show with a musical number that highlighted classic films with the help of Anna Kendrick and Jack Black. It got a rousing ovation from the crowd.
Worst: Terrence Howard elicits a lot of emotions out of his audience and pop culture observers, including occasional embarrassment and disgust. We’re still trying to figure what the star of the mega-blockbuster “Empire” show was doing onstage with those very dramatic, pregnant pause while announcing the last three nominees for Best Picture (Imitation Game, Whiplash and Selma). It was strange and very uncomfortable. You could almost hear the collective click of millions of TV remotes to another channel to avoid the awkward moment. The audience inside the Dolby Theater had to sit there and digest it with constipated looks on their faces.
Best: Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress for her work in Boyhood, and before concluding her speech she said with power and intensity, “It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America,” which inspired a rousing and enthusiastic cheers from the audience from no less than Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez.
Worst: Neil Patrick Harris walking out on stage in his underwear. Nothing else needs to be said.
Best: John Legend’s and Common’s performance of the Oscar-winning song “Glory” riveting, but it brought tears to the eyes of many in the room, including David Oyelowo and Chris Pine. Oyelowo, who brilliantly portrayed Martin Luther King in the Academy Award-nominated Selma, for which Glory was written and produced specifically for, was so emotional, he had to be comforted by Oprah, who sat directly behind him.
Worst: Was it just us, or did John Travolta molest the face of Idina Menzel in front of tens of millions of viewers. The former Hollywood heartthrob from Saturday Night Fever and Grease looked like a dirty old man trying to give away candy. He was trying to apologize for his famous “Adele Dazeem” flub, but he made it worst by appearing like he wanted to make love to her on stage with his nonstop caressing of her cheeks.
Best: Lady Gaga is not know for being deep, but Mother Monster focused on her amazing voice for The Sound of Music‘s 50th Anniversary tribute, and she killed it. And in the process, we found out that she can actually sing! And what’s even better? Julie Andrews came on stage afterward and gave her props.
