A Night of History and Resilience with Ibram X. Kendi at The Wright Museum

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is set to kick off its Black History Month Program with a remarkable event on Thursday, February 1st, from 5-7pm. This special occasion will feature the #1 New York Times bestselling author and scholar, Ibram X. Kendi, in conversation with Neil A. Barclay, President/CEO of The Wright Museum.

Kendi is a distinguished National Book Award winner who’s notable works include “Antiracist Baby,” “How to Be an Antiracist,” and “How to Raise an Antiracist.” Time magazine recognized Kendi as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2020, and he has been awarded a 2021 MacArthur Fellowship.

Unveiling the Untold Story: Barracoon Adaptation for Young Readers

The highlight of the evening will be Kendi’s discussion of his adaptation of Zora Neale Hurston’s Barracoon for young readers. This adaptation serves as a gateway for young minds into the true-life story of Cudjo Lewis, one of the last-known survivors of the Atlantic slave trade. Lewis was abducted from Africa on the final “Black Cargo” ship to arrive in the United States, leaving a profound impact on the history and culture of the nation.

In collaboration with the iconic Zora Neale Hurston, Kendi’s adaptation brings Cudjo’s incredible journey to life, providing young readers with a well-crafted introduction to this pivotal chapter in history. The adaptation is a part of the first middle-grade offering from the renowned authors, adding depth and understanding to the experiences of those who endured the brutalities of the Atlantic human trade.
