In a world where life can be complex and challenging, having someone to turn to for guidance and support is invaluable. And while it’s always great to talk to your parents or friends for direction, no one gives needed advice in a way that puts you in your place while simultaneously being your hype man quite like a big sister.
Enter our vivacious and inspiring host and favorite fictional sister, Jennifer Onwenu, who has taken the world by storm with her popular show “Ask Jenn,” where people seek advice on life, love and everything in between. She’s a force to be reckoned with — a black woman with boundless energy and a raw, real approach that speaks to everyone. Her show is a hub of lively discussions and thought-provoking insights drawing in viewers from all walks of life. In a time where the world needs hope and encouragement more than ever, this dynamic social worker is the big sister we all deserve.
With her infectious personality and relatable approach, “Ask Jenn” has collected a massive following across social media platforms. Her videos and posts are filled with witty one-liners and hilarious commentary on everything from love to finances. And, when it comes to advice, she’s never short on wisdom. Her candid and unfiltered responses are like a breath of fresh air providing a refreshing break from the usual scripted advice. Despite not envisioning a talk show in her career path, Jenn’s life experiences have uniquely prepared her for this journey.
“Naturally being a helper, giving people advice, talking to people with needs and connecting people with resources, is literally my life’s work. To be able to use my skills in a non-clinical setting and just using those skills that I’ve gained through my social work and education is rewarding. I love being able to give people real, honest and somewhat professional advice without them having to sit in front of a therapist or feeling judged. That’s something that I’ve been able to provide with my background as a social worker and that makes my experience so special.”
Jenn’s success as a social worker, propelling her to become the reigning “Queen of Guidance,” is not solely due to her academic accomplishments. While her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from Michigan State University have undoubtedly equipped her with the necessary knowledge and skills, it is her personal journey that has truly molded her for the industry of therapy and advice.
Jenn’s life was abruptly altered after her parents passed away, one when first she was just a baby and the other during her senior year of high school. As a teenager, she was taken under the wing of her older sister Latasha, who assumed the role of caregiver to ensure that Jenn could still experience the joys of being a carefree teenager. Despite having to help raise her younger siblings, Latasha managed to maintain an active social life that drew admiration and respect from their community and friends. Her selflessness and dedication left a lasting impact on Jenn, shaping her worldview and inspiring her to use her own skills to help others.
“She made sure that I just had the teenage life that she always wanted to have. So, she was the person who was driving and picking me up from teen nights and other events. She provided me the opportunity to be like an extrovert.”
Jenn has always admired her sister’s ability to juggle multiple responsibilities, and it’s not surprising that they both chose careers in social work. Latasha’s positive influence has undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping Jenn’s outlook on life and motivating her to use her skills to make a difference in other people’s lives. Their bond is a shining example of the impact that one person can have on another’s life, particularly through the power of sisterhood.
It’s easy to see why Jenn is the ultimate big sister we all deserve. Her genuine care and concern for others comes from a deep understanding of the struggles that people face. Through collaboration and inspiration, she has become a media personality who is widely admired for her thoughtful insights and down-to-earth approach. Whether discussing the complexities of relationships or navigating the challenges of everyday life, Jenn’s wisdom and relatable style make her a trusted source of guidance and support.
Ask Jenn has been an unwavering voice for young women, and our beloved big sister has never failed to come through for us.
Big Sis Wisdom with “Ask Jenn”
Somebody cares!
“Your audience will find you the people who are watching Jerry Springer are not the same people who are watching Ricky Lake and are not the same people who watch Oprah. So, if you think something is oversaturated, just know somebody cares. Even if it’s just one person.”
Find your Tribe!
“Find your people and find your tribe. Finding the individuals who want to see you do your best is something that I’ve been able to do and hone in on, and I think that is like the key to success. Finding true friends can really change your life.”
Take Breaks!
“If I need a break, I need a break. In the month of May I’m not taking any bookings. I’m taking time for myself. It’s important to take breaks and to take time for yourself.”
