May is National Bike Month and Wayne County Parks has a variety of biking events and facilities for residents to enjoy.
To Celebrate National Bike Month, Wayne County Parks invites residents to stop by the Nankin Mills Interpretive Center and pick up a Bike Safety Information kit which includes a bike light. The office is open from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
The Saturday in the Park program runs weekly each Saturday from May through September. During the event, Hines Drive is closed for six miles from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive for participants to bike ride, run, or walk safely without traffic on the road. Hines Drive is closed weekly from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM and parking is available at Nankin Mills Park.
The Hines Park Bike Park opened in 2020 and is a hit with bikers of all ages. The bike park has a paved pump track and a natural surface bike skills park with challenges like wood berms, giant cones and elevated ramps. The bike park is located at Hawthorne Ridge Park in Westland and is open from dawn to dusk. The project earned a 2021 Park Design Award from the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association.
While there are several trails for mountain biking in Hines Park, the most popular are the Lakeview Trail and Riverview Trail in Livonia. The Riverview Trail is 1.7 miles long and gives views of the Rouge River mixed with meadows and hardwood forests. The Lakeview Trail is a 2.6-mile trail that follows the south shoreline of Newburgh Lake. The trails are open year-round from dawn to dusk.
