It’s seemingly already a hassle to catch a ride from a bus with schedule delays, cold weather to combat with and other factors that make the trip a little less than stellar.
Now add longer wait times due to about 25 percent of SMART’s bus service being canceled or delayed daily due to COVID-19 cases rising and fewer bus operators clocking in, the Detroit News reported.
To make up for the shortage, the bus company had to reduce trips and make changes to current schedules as a result, it said in a news release.
SMART, like other companies feeling the pinch of the pandemic, are working at a smaller capacity due to not having available workers. SMART reported that it’s short by about 80 bus operators, and it can only operate at 75% of its pre-pandemic levels, according to the article.
“By scaling back service levels, riders will be assured of more reliable service to get to work or to other important destinations,” the agency said in its release.
