DAPCEP Seeks to Fund Scholarships for Students on Giving Tuesday

DETROIT – Giving Tuesday has arrived and the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP), a nonprofit maximizing underrepresented youth’s success in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), hopes to raise monies to cover the $100 semester tuition for some forty (40) DAPCEP pre-Kindergarten through second grade Explorer students. Giving Tuesday donors can invest in STEM exposure for DAPCEP youth by donating.

In tandem with Giving Tuesday, Altair, a technology company with open-architecture solutions, will host an exclusive virtual recruiting event on November 30th from 5:00-6:30p.m. ET. Altair will contribute to DAPCEP for each alum who registers and attends the event. DAPCEP alumni can learn about its partner Altair, open job opportunities, and conduct a preliminary interview on the spot. Participants should register for the recruiting event using this link: https://zcu.io/ouAW.

Since 1976, DAPCEP provides year-round STEM programming to nearly 11,000 pre-K through 12th graders each year. With a 50:50 female-male ratio and a near 100 percent graduation rate, DAPCEP collaborates with 40+ schools and universities, corporations, community organizations and public entities. The educational nonprofit has amassed more than 70,000 alumni, 68 percent of whom entered STEM careers and credit DAPCEP for their STEM success.

“With exposure to STEM as early as pre-Kindergarten, students people become more comfortable with and are not intimidated by  tech experiments, terminology and formulas,” said DAPCEP Executive Director Michelle L. Reaves. “Early STEM access nurtures a student’s critical thinking, creativity, confidence, communication and collaboration – important skillsets that will help that young person succeed not only in STEM but in all their academic endeavors.” DAPCEP Explorers Spring 2022 modules will be held each Saturday starting early February.

“Funding is critical to DAPCEP’s success. We are so grateful for the ongoing support from our
forty+ corporate, school, university and community partners. Without such support, we would
not be able to make our robust programming feasible for the number of area youth we serve,”
said Reaves.
