Motor City Match Winner to Open 2,000-square-foot Sportswear Shop in Oak Park

A new avenue to Oak Park’s shopping district is set to open to the public on November 1 at 10:30 a.m. Empire Sports is a 2,000 sq. ft. space located at 13181 W. 10 Mile Oak Park, MI inside Parkwoods Plaza. Empire Sports will open its doors with a wide selection of sportswear and custom team apparel. Owner and operator, Michaelyn Roberson created the Empire Sports brand as an extension of her sportswear line, Noir Sportswear, a unisex sportswear brand created for comfort and reliability.

Roberson will open as the first black-woman-owned sporting goods store in Oak Park, MI. In 2017, Roberson anchored as a Motor City Match winner for her Noir Sportswear brand.

Eventually, Roberson secured and renovated the space during the Coronavirus pandemic, with a hefty challenge of securing funding resources to turn her passion into a reality. Additionally, Roberson experienced supply and demand struggles, along with the stress of finding potential employees.

While Roberson is working around the clock to provide substantial options to the local community, she aims to keep the pricing affordable while providing unlimited options. By doing so, Roberson says, “we will donate a percentage of profits to local charities or youth sports organizations, while also engaging in community events,” said Roberson, “but our actual goal here is to be the ultimate go-to resource for our community’s custom sportswear needs, especially high schools and colleges that are in need of team apparel.”

As an incentive for new shoppers, Roberson will host a contest to name their mascot and the grand prize winner will receive a $500 scholarship for their creativity. Potential contestants can enter to win on the Empire Sports website. For more information about Empire Sports and custom apparel options, visit www.empiresporting.com
