Mayor Mike Duggan presented Keys to the City to two distinguished men in the religious community. It was the first time a father and son were simultaneously recognized for this honor and for their ministry work. Bishops J. Drew Sheard and John Henry Sheard are celebrated for their ministry and leadership in Detroit and around the world.
“This is a city that my dad refused to leave”, said Ethan B. Sheard, Superintendent assistant pastor, Greater Mitchell Temple Church of God In Christ. Sheard accepted the honor on behalf of his father who could not attend the Monday event. “He came here when he was 17, he migrated here from Mississippi, and he never wanted to leave Detroit. He loved Detroit; He built a community. He built his church and built this home here and for the city to bestowed this honor on him is quite a wonderful privilege.”
Bishop J. Drew Sheard and Bishop John Henry Sheard are both leaders in the Church of God in Christ Inc. and legacy Detroit pastors. Both renowned men have given more than 80 years of service through their ministries to the residents of Detroit. “In the sphere of religion, there are no two people in this city who have ever done more in our community,” said Mayor Mike Duggan.
“Just to think that GOD has allowed me to rise from the city to where I am in the Church of God in Christ and then to have the mayor to bestow this honor on me, I am certainly honored by it,” said Bishop J. Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishop & Chief Apostle, Church of God in Christ, Inc, Senior Pastor, Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God In Christ.
“My father was just elected to an unprecedented five terms as the chairman of the board of bishops and then I was elected presiding bishop. It is great joy with our family that God has elevated us to this level. We take it very seriously. We serve people and we love people.” The Key to the City presentation was a family affair at The Aretha Ampitheater and included remarks by gospel recording artist Kierra Sheard-Kelly, the Sheards’ daughter & granddaughter.
Detroit City Council president Benda Jones, other elected officials, including sitting judges were also in attendance.
