Albion College basketball player Zach Winston dies after being hit by train

Albion College student-athlete Zachary Winston died Saturday night after he was hit by an oncoming train in Albion, Michigan. He was 19.

Winston, the brother of Michigan State University basketball player Cassius Winston, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday when he intentionally stepped onto the tracks in front of the oncoming Amtrack, officials confirmed.

Winston was a sophomore at Albion College and a graduate of the University of Detroit Jesuit High School in 2018. He was a three-year varsity basketball player for the Cubs, a member of three district and regional championships, and one state championship team in 2016 with his older brother Cassius. He also achieved all-league and all-city distinction and was inducted into the National Honor Society.

A statement addressed to the Albion College community from Albion College President Mauri Ditzler said: “Last night, our family lost a student. And as families do in difficult times, we must come together to mourn and to embrace one another. We have been in close contact with the student’s family and are doing everything we can to support them. In accordance with the family’s wishes, we are not sharing a name or details at this time. Please keep the family close in your heart.”

Winston played his first game of the season Friday and had three points, two assists and two steals in 15 minutes in the Britons’ 71-52 loss at Mount Union. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 2.6 points in 13.8 minutes per game last season as a freshman. His younger brother Khy also plays for Albion College.

It is unclear if Cassius Winston will play in Sunday night’s game for MSU against Binghamton.
