CEED Detroit Business Offering – Free Procurement Training for Small Businesses

CEED Detroit Business, an initiative of the Great Lakes Women’s Business Council, announced that there are openings for 25 small businesses to be a part of its Detroit Business Growth program.  Orientation will be held Monday, October 14, 1-3 p.m. at the Grand River Workplace, located at 19120 Grand River in Detroit, and is open to all Detroit-based small business owners.  

After the application process is completed, selected business owners will attend three-hour sessions on Fridays for 11 weeks starting November 1, 2019. Business growth sessions include: where to look for bid opportunities; building a marketing strategy; creating a competitive bid proposal and developing a powerful capability statement.  Financial, HR and digital marketing components have also been added. 

The Detroit Business Growth Initiative is an innovative program aimed at growing small businesses by leveraging certifications held by minorities, women and veterans in Detroit.  Certification is a game-changing marketing tool when combined with procurement training and coaching. It will connect existing Detroit-based companies to contract opportunities in both corporate and government arenas. Detroit-based business owners looking to procure new contracts are encouraged to apply.   

Participants also receive up to 30 hours of one-on-one counseling and coaching for one year.  The program is designed to help them better utilize certifications and gain capital and contract opportunities. 

Tony Farris, CEED’s business growth manager, explained, “Since the program’s inception three years ago, 42 businesses have completed the training. Combined, they have won $1.3 million in new bids and created 59 new jobs through the second quarter of 2019.” 

Annabelle Duncan, the owner of Blessed Hands Interpreting Service, praised the program, stating, “The Detroit Business Growth Initiative allows us the opportunity to have the inside track on getting contracts and knowing how to bid on those contracts.”  She has received three contracts since participating in the program.
