Sankofa Mind + Body Presents: The Yoga Bath Sessions

Sankofa Mind + Body will present The Yoga Bath Sessions, an all-day 420-friendly sound bath and yoga experience structured around self-care, clearing the chakras to achieve balance and to detox from stress, emotional trauma, and anxiety. The event will be hosted by sound meditation facilitator Tafari K. Stevenson-Howard and yoga instructor Simone Winter.

The event was conceptualized by Stevenson-Howard after his first sound bathing session while
recently vacationing in the Brazilian rainforest.

“I felt an overwhelming sense of joy when I first experienced sound meditation,” said StevensonHoward. “I was in the rainforest, simultaneously holding hands with 60 people while surrounded by a cluster of indigenous sound meditation practitioners who used crystal bowls to produce sound vibrations that encapsulated my body, soul and mind. I was transfixed by the process as it produced sensations in my body that I had never felt before. It was such a physical, emotional and psychological release that I felt compelled to learn more about it and bring the tradition back to Detroit.”

Scientific studies linking the relaxing musical contemplative techniques of sound meditations with stress and anxiety reduction has stirred a renewed interest and intellectual curiosity in the practice, as individuals and corporate entities look to integrate wellness programming into their daily life acumens. According to Stevenson-Howard, sound meditations fill a timely societal need.

“The world is in need of healing,” he said. “We have political, social and economic turmoil. People are stressed out over jobs, family and educational commitments, and that produces a variety of anxiety issues. Sound meditation gives people the necessary tools to unplug and get themselves in a positive meditative space to heal. This is more than a trend, it is a movement that addresses the need for relief and clarity in the daily lives of people.”

While Stevenson-Howard facilitates sound bath meditation, noted Yoga instructor Simone Winter works collaboratively providing yoga instruction, which also has many tangible valuable wellness benefits.

The Yoga Bath Sessions are divided up into two program components, a 10:00 a.m. morning session dubbed “Better Days,” which includes a sound meditation, yoga session, and vegan refreshments; and a 6:00 p.m. evening session dubbed “Night Moves,” which includes sound meditation, yoga session, vegan dinner and dance party afterglow with culinary menu selections provided by Chef Sunflower of LuckyPistil (Culinary Food Labe) and sonic musical tapestries provided by internationally-renowned DJ Kai Alce and producer/DJ/multi-instrumentalist Drummer B.

The Yoga Bath Sessions will take place on Saturday, September 14, at the N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art located at 52 E. Forest Ave in Detroit. Participants have the option of attending one or both sessions (10:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m.) For more information visit www.sankofamindandbody.com
