2019 40 under 40 Honoree Kierra Sheard Eclipses Kanye West on Billboard Chart

Fresh off her starring role in Lifetime’s The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, the network’s highest viewed film since 2016, Kierra Sheard released her self-titled album Kierra. In just under 2 weeks since its release, the album has hit No.1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums, replacing Kanye West’s Jesus Is King which held the top spot for the past six months.

Sheard is quick to point out it’s not necessarily a battle for No. 1, but rather a fight to lead people to Christ. She took to Instagram and said,

“As this is not a competition but a race/journey that we are on to win souls and uplift the world with the message of Jesus Christ, hope, love, and more.”

The race to win souls has helped shape Sheard’s unique sound throughout the years. Working alongside her talented brother, and Michigan Chronicle 40 under 40 Trailblazer, music producer J. Drew Sheard, Kierra’s music appeals to a new generation of listeners who may not have embraced traditional gospel.

Kierra, Sheard’s first new project in five years, is arguably her greatest example to date of her growing appeal. In fact, she’s said that if you play the right track while you’re on the aux chord, your friends may not even believe it’s gospel. Whether it’s the funky bass line on “I Choose You” that makes you want to do your best Detroit ballrooming, or “Sunday Flow” where you can’t help but bob your head to the 808 trap beat; the half live recording, half studio album has something for everyone’s taste.

Kierra has more than 3 million streams and is Billboard’s No. 1 Top Christian & Gospel Album. Sheard is grateful for the love shown towards her thus far.

“Those of you who believe in me, thank you so much. You all made it happen and I am so grateful,” said Sheard.

“God is faithful…the number one movie and the number one album, come on God is faithful. I love you all. This is history and it’s still going up.”

Kierra is available for download and purchase on all music platforms.

The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel is available on video on demand.
