Wake up Detroit and celebrate African American Independence Day. The observance of Juneteenth is about the journey and achievement of African Americans – from a horrific period of sanctioned enslavement to the pinnacle of human endeavors. It is a story of pride, resilience and determination that will always be of historical and spiritual importance –as it serves us well to understand that together, we can overcome all obstacles in our path.
Despite the Emancipation Proclamation taking effect January 1, 1863, June 19th 1865 is the historical day word of emancipation reached the enslaved in Galveston, Texas. As we pay tribute to the journey, we acknowledge the many roles and contributions of the African American spirit to our society. We embrace the past as well as the future that unity, respect and appreciation can bring. To begin the Juneteenth Celebrations in Michigan, Juneteenth Michigan Chapter is hosting a launch celebration on May 23rd at Cutter’s Bar & Grill from 3:30 p.m. – 9:00pm. Cutter’s is located in the Eastern Market District at 2638 Orleans, Detroit, MI 48207. This event will kick off the movement and start the uniting of our communities for this important period of reflection.
Saturday June 13, 2015 Juneteenth Michigan Chapter presents the 3rd Annual Charity Golf Outing at The Woodlands of Van Buren Golf Course, 39670 Ecorse, Wayne, MI 48184. Tickets cost $85 per person and include green fee, par lunch at the turn, followed by an All American Buffet Awards Luncheon. Golfers will have a chance to win $10,000 among other prizes.
