Reflections: Is She All That?

steveAshley Jackson, who reportedly calls herself Ajae, says she will be making her show business debut in the very near future.

Either she has a lot of talent or a lot of self-confidence (maybe both) because she says she sings, acts, raps, dances and writes music.

Now 15 years old, Ashley is the daughter of Jesse Jackson and Dr. Karin Stanford, the woman the civil rights icon (and grandstander, just like Al Sharpton) had a four-year affair with. That had to be huge insult to his wife since 1962, Jacqueline.

Interestingly, Dr. Stanford has no regrets about the affair and believes it was meant to be so that Ashley could be born.

IN CASE you didn’t know, and there is a good chance you didn’t, there is a fairly popular rapper — who was recently arrested for “obstructing a peace officer,” whatever that means — who calls himself Nipsey Hussle.

No doubt the late comedian and game show panelist Nipsey Russell would not appreciate the “name invasion.”

Then too, one has to wonder how actor Larenz Tate (“Love Jones,” “The Inkwell,” “Ray” and “Why do Fools Fall in Love?” among others) feels about the porn actor who goes by the name of Larenz Taste. That is, if he knows about it. Not to criticize his profession, but “Taste” is still wrong.

KIM WESTON is a singer who never got her deserved amount of props during her years with Motown.

She had a great voice and had big hit with the exciting “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)” as well as “Helpless” and she recorded the classic “It Takes Two” with Marvin Gaye. In addition, she had other singles that should have been bigger, namely “A Thrill a Moment,” “Looking for the Right Guy” and “Love Me All the Way.”

Also, in 1970 Weston, after leaving Motown, recorded the definitive rendition of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.”

To our knowledge she is no longer active

DURING A recent interview, Mathew Knowles, music executive, record producer, manager, businessman and father of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, implied that Solange attacking brother-in-law Jay-Z on that elevator may have been staged.

He said Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s ticket sales went up as did Solange’s album sales.

That possibility crossed my mind, but Solange seemed to be really furious, definitely not acting.

The TBS network canceled CeeLo Green’s reality TV show, “The Good Life,” after just one season. The focus was on his juggling being a producer, recording artist and performer.

I know it’s for a worthy cause, but I am sick of celebrities taking “the ice bucket challenge.” Some of them are doing it just for the publicity.

Actor Evan Ross and singer Ashlee Simpson were married recently at the Connecticut home of his mother, Diana Ross.

“Promise to Love,” the new album by Kem, has gotten off to a great start. So has “Smokey & Friends,” the album featuring the legendary star doing duets, some expected, like Mary J. Blige, others strange, such as Steven Tyler.

Nick Cannon is writing a book of poetry for children.

Tavis Smiley competing on “Dancing With the Stars”? I must see that!

BETCHA DIDN’T KNOW…that Patti Austin’s godfather is Quincy Jones and her godmother was Dinah Washington.

MEMORIES: “All This Love” (DeBarge), “Rock Your Baby” (George McCrae), “Let’s Straighten it Out” (Latimore), “Love, Need and Want You” (Patti LaBelle), “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration” (the Righteous Brothers), “Remember What I Told You to Forget” (Tavares), “Get Down Tonight” (KC and the Sunshine Band), “Disco Inferno” (the Trammps), “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle” (Deniece Williams).

BLESSINGS to Duke Fakir, Gerald W. Smith, David Banks, Ken Donaldson, Georgella Muirhead, Sharon Taylor, Bob Berg, Mario L. Morrow and Caroline Crawford.

WORDS OF THE WEEK, from Al Cohen: “Sometimes the universe tests us with rejection. Life asks us if we are confident enough to keep going in the face of obstacles.”

Let the music play!
